Protect Your House From Floods & Water Damage – Roof; Gutters & Drains

The ability to drain excess water away from houses is always an important factor to consider when building a house. A house requires an efficient design to map stormwater away from it to prevent flooding and water damage caused by flooding. Proper roofing and gutter designs are mandatory to keep the moisture away from the structure’s foundation. Installing a proper drainage system and storm drain pipes for moving the water away are some of the ways to consider for further protection. In olden times, people built drain systems that featured deep and intricate pipelines. The commonly used materials for the drainage construction were stone, wood, lead, and clay. Technological innovations enhanced and nowadays most of the drainage systems are built with materials such as brass, copper, and some types of plastic.

The roof is a major entity to consider to prevent unwanted water to accumulate and cause moisture-related problems. Roofs forever remains a fundamental architectural element to maintain the shelter. The common practice of making the roof as a slope was done to keep rainwater away from the structures. Water easily slides down the sloped surface of any well-constructed roof. Measures should be taken to make the water stream away easily from the ground. Without a proper set-up of gutters or drains to move water away from where it is accumulated, a lot of moisture problems may arise.

Roof Drainage And Its Importance

An effective roof drainage system ensures that the water and debris always move away from the surface of the roof and when it flows down, it makes sure that it won’t flow towards the basement or foundation and cause moisture-related problems. If the water is left to pool beside the foundation, this will lead to leaking, flooding the ground floor, weakening of the basement and dangerous mold.

When constructing gutters the slope is the crucial element to consider. If the slope is not accurate, this will lead to the accumulation of debris along the slope and lead to malfunctioning of the gutters. In colder places, this malfunctioning can again lead to the formation of ice dams. Roofs with low slopes must be designed with special drainage for better flow rates and increasing the roof capacity.

Proper maintenance – Better than Repair

Maintenance is essential to ensure that the drainage is functioning properly. Gutters drain, and downspouts are to be monitored and cleaned regularly to prevent damage and cluttering. Conducting a roof inspection once every two years or so with the experts will help in incrementing the efficiency and life of your roofing solution. Maintaining and protecting is always better than repairing and replacing.

Roofing inspections help you determine the integrity of the roof, it’s a lifetime, when it needs to be replaced, etc. Replacing the roofing can be a messy and expensive task so to avoid it first hand, proper inspections and corrections should be made mandatory. Spending for the small roofing repairs like correcting the drainage slope, repositioning the water flowing downspouts, etc, will aid in a long time by increasing the lifetime of the roof, walls, and foundation.
